RT claims Mariupol Theatre reopens “after the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ terrorist attack.”

RT has framed the 2022 destruction of Mariupol’s Drama Theater as a “Ukrainian terrorist attack” while touting its reconstruction and repoening. Multiple independent investigations concluded Russian forces bombed the theater, likely committing a war crime; the reopening is widely reported as an occupation propaganda showcase. RT’s wording is classic narrative inversion and atrocity denial.

THE CLAIM

RT says the “Russian Drama Theater officially opens in Mariupol almost 3 years after the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ terrorist … [attack],” implying Ukraine destroyed the site.

THE FACTS

  1. Who struck the theater in 2022?
    Amnesty International, OSCE, and an Associated Press visual investigation conclude the theater was destroyed by a Russian airstrike; “Ukraine did it” claims lack evidence and are refuted.

  2. Scale and context of the attack:
    Hundreds of civilians were sheltering there; the word “CHILDREN” was marked outside to deter attack. AP estimates ~600 dead; HRW documented the civilian-shelter use. The image below is from an AP visual investigation that highlights how “a week before the bombing, the theater’s set designer used white paint to inscribe the word “CHILDREN” in Cyrillic letters on the pavement outside, in the hope of staving off an attack from above. The signs, painted in both the front and back entrances, were large enough to be read even from satellites.”

  3. Reopening under occupation:
    The building has been reopened by Moscow-installed authorities and used as a reconstruction/“normalization” symbol; survivors and local officials call it laundering and whitewashing of a war crime.

NARRATIVE CONTEXT & STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE

This is atrocity denial / blame transfer designed to:
• sanitize a likely Russian war crime;
• project “terrorism” onto Ukraine;
• use “reconstruction” optics to legitimize occupation and Russification of Mariupol.
