How To Spot, Monitor and Defend Against Authoritarian Disinformation and Intimidation Campaigns.

Russian government disinformation has rapidly intensified since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Malicious narratives targeting Ukraine, Canada and its allies are intended to undermine Western support for Ukraine and silence critics of the Kremlin in Canada and the democratic nations aligned with it.

Through a toxic mix of disinformation, conspiracies and intimidation, the Russian government seeks to marginalize Canadians of Ukrainian heritage.

However, the Russia’s authoritarian government is not alone. Other authoritarian regimes engage in similar activities to advance their interests.

This 90 minute workshop offers strategies on how to recognize disinformation and intimidation and how to defend against them. This includes advanced forensic and reporting tools.  The workshops are led by a leading Canadian expert on disinformation and the director of DisinfoWatch.org, Marcus Kolga.

The 90 minute webinar will cover:

  1. The current information landscape and common techniques that are used by Russia and other authoritarian regimes to manipulate media.
  2. Current narratives, how and why they are promoted and amplified by Russians state actors and those aligned with them.
  3. How to think beyond verifying individual posts to monitoring overall narratives.
  4. Practical tips and tools to verify online content.
  5. How to report disinformation and hate on social media.
  6. How to identify and report foreign intimidation operations.
