Kremlin SVR Controlled Platform Launders False Claims to Undermine EU-Canadian Freeze on Russian Assets

Strategic Culture, a U.S.-sanctioned Russian propaganda platform run by the Kremlin’s foreign intelligence service, SVR, published an article that contains several false claims focusing on the European move to freeze over $200 billion in Russian State assets held by Brussels based Euroclear.  The article mixes some current facts (EU move to indefinitely immobilise Russian sovereign assets) with manipulative framing (“theft,” “totalitarian EU”), Nazi analogies, and conspiracy tropes (Soros/WEF, migration panic). It injects false or misleading claims about EU procedures and Romania’s elections. Overall, this is classic Kremlin-aligned narrative laundering intended to delegitimize EU policy and support for Ukraine.

This articles is part of an intensifying campaign aimed at countering the EU’s move and eroding Western support for it.

THE CLAIMS:

  • The EU has “permanently seized” €210B in Russian assets by “rewriting rules” via Article 122 TFEU, bypassing democracy; this is simply “theft.”

  • EU leaders (esp. Ursula von der Leyen and Kaja Kallas) are “Nazi-like” and the EU is “totalitarian.”

  • Germans are becoming “indoctrinated” and “radicalized” through its publicly funded broadcaster ZDF.
  • “Romania’s elections were annulled because the EU disapproved of the results.”

  • “Indefinitely seizing another’s property is simply theft”

  • “Europe seems intent on prolonging the war”

  • “The EU has transformed… into a totalitarian state”

THE FACTS:

  • What the EU actually did: EU institutions moved to indefinitely immobilise -freeze- ~€210 bilion in Russian sovereign assets, using an emergency legal route (Article 122) to prevent periodic vetoes—not a blanket “seizure” or expropriation. This was reported by multiple outlets and EU channels.

  • Strategic Culture’s provenance: The Strategic Culture Foundation is identified by the U.S. government as a Russian state-directed propaganda outlet and was sanctioned in 2021 for interference operations.

  • About the author: Sonja van den Ende is widely documented as a pro-Kremlin propagandist who has taken Russian military “press tours” and produced disinformation.

  • False claim on Romania: Romania’s 2024 presidential vote was annulled by Romania’s Constitutional Court, amid irregularities/interference concerns; a re-run in 2025 elected Nicușor Dan. This was not an EU annulment.

  • Inflammatory tropes: The piece uses Nazi analogies about Baltic leaders and “Soros/WEF” conspiracies—well-known Kremlin manipulation cues flagged by disinformation researchers and the DISARM framework.

  • Freezing Russian assets held in Western financial institutions is not “theft”: it is a lawful and proportionate sovereign response to Russia’s well-documented, illegal, and unprovoked war against Ukraine.

  • The claim that Europe is “intent on prolonging the war” is false and reverses cause and effect: The war continues because Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine; European support is aimed at deterring further aggression and creating conditions for a just and durable peace, not extending the conflict.

  • The claim that the EU has become a “totalitarian state” is demonstrably false: The European Union is a rules-based political and legal union governed by elected institutions, independent courts, and treaty-bound checks and balances that are the opposite of totalitarian rule.

NARRATIVE CONTEXT & STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE:

Undermine EU legal steps on Russian assets; fracture EU unity; discredit women leaders (gendered smears); and sap Western support for Ukraine by labeling assistance as “theft” and Europe as “totalitarian.” This matches standard Kremlin information-warfare playbooks.

AMPLIFICATION CHAIN (Spread Map):

  • Seeder: Strategic Culture site + its Telegram/Twitter/VK prompts embedded in the article.

  • Likely next hops: Known proxy blogs and X/TG channels that routinely launder SCF content to EU/US fringe audiences; then translation/localization in anti-EU ecosystems.
