Russian Embassy in Canada Falsely Claims Canada is “Pro-War”

The Claim:

  1. A tweet published by the Russian Embassy in Canada and retweeted by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserts that Prime Minister Trudeau’s cabinet holds a “pro-war” position, implying that Canada is actively promoting or escalating conflict rather than supporting Ukraine in its defense.
  2. It suggests that the “Ukraine issue” will be resolved without Ottawa’s participation, implying that Canada’s support is irrelevant or ineffectual.
  3. The use of the cat emoji (😺) adds a dismissive and mocking tone, reinforcing an attempt to belittle Canada’s role and diminish its significance in the broader geopolitical landscape.

The Facts:

  1. Canada is not “pro-war” – The Trudeau government, like most NATO allies, supports Ukraine’s defense of its sovereignty, freedom and democracy. Canada has provided military aid, training, and diplomatic backing, but has never advocated an escalation of the war that Russia started in February 2022.
  2. Canada has played a significant role in supporting Ukraine.  To suggest that Russia’s war against Ukraine will be resolved “without Ottawa’s participation” ignores Canada’s real and measurable impact on Ukraine’s war effort.
  3. Russia’s framing of the “Ukraine issue” – The Kremlin routinely avoids calling its full-scale invasion a war, instead using vague terms like “Ukraine issue” to downplay its illegal invasion, war crimes, and attempted annexation of Ukrainian territory. The phrasing erases Ukrainian agency and implies that Russia alone dictates how and when the war ends.

Narrative Context:

The tweet from the Russian Embassy in Canada follows a predictable Kremlin disinformation pattern:

  • Deflecting blame for the war from Russia onto its adversaries.
  • Belittling Canada’s contributions to Ukraine’s defense.
  • Using sarcastic and mocking rhetoric to ridicule Western nations and sow division among allies.

The reality is that Canada is a key supporter of Ukraine, and the war’s outcome will be significantly shaped by Western military, financial, and diplomatic efforts—including Ottawa’s.
