PRC Issues False Denial of Interference in Canadian Elections & Democracy

A Global Times article titled “Chinese Embassy in Canada refutes allegations of China’s interference in Canadian elections” presents the Chinese government’s false denial of involvement in Canada’s electoral processes. The spokesperson from the Chinese Embassy asserts that China adheres to a strict policy of non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs and dismisses claims of meddling as baseless slander lacking factual evidence. There is clear evidence that China has interfered in past Canadian elections and is interfering in the current election process.

CLAIM 1:

“China firmly opposes interference in other countries’ internal affairs and never interferes in Canada’s elections.”

FACTS:

  • Canadian intelligence (CSIS) and the official public inquiry (led by Justice Marie-Josée Hogue) found clear evidence of Chinese interference, including:

    • Disinformation campaigns.

    • Covert financing of preferred candidates.

    • Intimidation tactics against Canadian politicians critical of Beijing.

CLAIM 2:

“Allegations of China’s interference in Canadian elections are completely groundless slander.”

Falsehood:

  • Multiple credible investigations by Canadian security agencies and parliamentary committees have documented China’s systematic interference in Canadian democracy.

  • The Hogue inquiry explicitly concluded that China was the primary foreign interference actor.

CLAIM 3:

“Canada fabricated allegations to smear China, politicizing the so-called interference to serve its domestic political agenda.”

Misleading statement:

  • Canada’s findings were based on comprehensive investigations, not politically motivated fabrications.

  • Claims of politicization ignore bipartisan and non-partisan consensus in Canada about the legitimacy and seriousness of Chinese interference threats.

Narrative Context:

These false statements are a textbook example of Chinese government state-backed disinformation, intentionally misrepresenting evidence-based accusations as unfounded smears. Such denials aim to portray China as a victim of unfair accusations and distract from the PRC’s ongoing efforts to interfere in Canada’s democratic processes.
