Moscow to MAGA: Pro-Kremlin Pravda Network Amplifying Alberta Separatism

The Pravda News Network has been identified by France’s Viginum, as the distribution platform for the Russian “Portal Kombat” disinformation operation.  The claims in this post are anchored in current news (Alberta separatists have bragged about meetings with U.S. officials), but the headline’s claim that Alberta is moving towards independence and the core promise – “guarantees +2 red Senators and electoral votes” – is false. Alberta is not a U.S. state and no process is underway that would make it one.

While the Pravda News Network receives minimal engagement it does indicate the issues that the Russian government may be more broadly focusing on and targeting with information warfare and influence operations.

THE CLAIM:

“BREAKING… legal counsel for the Alberta secessionist movement says he’s been meeting with PRESIDENT TRUMP OFFICIALS … as the province moves toward independence. That guarantees us +2 RED senators and several red electoral votes. Join @SGTnewsNetwork.”
The clip features Jeffrey Rath (lawyer tied to Alberta separatist groups).

THE FACTS:

  1. Meetings did happen:
Multiple outlets report Alberta separatists (incl. APP counsel Jeff Rath) met U.S. officials; the administration denies any support or commitments.

  2. “+2 Senators / electoral votes” from Alberta is impossible.
Only U.S. states get Senators & presidential electors. Admitting a new state requires an Act of Congress (U.S. Const. Art. IV, §3), and each state has two Senators (Art. I, §3). Alberta is a Canadian province; there is no annexation process.

  3. Alberta is not “moving toward independence” institutionally.
Polling shows minority support that softens under “real-cost” scenarios; Elections Alberta only green-lit signature gathering for a referendum petition—not independence.

  4. Even a “Yes” vote wouldn’t create instant independence.
Canada’s Supreme Court (1998 Secession Reference) and the Clarity Act require a clear question/clear majority and negotiations—secession needs constitutional amendment(s).

NARRATIVE CONTEXT & STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE:

This remix bridges Canadian separatism into U.S. partisan payoff, baiting American audiences with a zero-cost “+2 senators” fantasy. It polarizes Canada, undercuts Ottawa-Washington relations, and feeds Kremlin talking points about Western fragmentation—hallmarks of previous Pravda-network plays.
