Electronic Ballot Counting Equipment Has Never Been Used In Canada’s Federal Elections

A widely shared meme on Facebook states that “glitchy” electronic voting systems were used in Canada’s Federal Election. The meme seems to cast doubt on the outcome of that election.

Electronic voting systems developed and built by the Canadian-founded, Dominion Voting Systems, were used in Georgia and Michigan for the US 2020 election.  In the week after the election, President Trump made unsubstantiated claims that “’software glitches’ undermined the vote counts in Michigan and Georgia.”

Elections Canada confirms that all federal election ballots are cast and counted manually without any electronic methods. Some provinces, such as Ontario and New Brunswick use Dominion Voting Systems for vote tabulation.

The claim that “glitchy” ballot counting machines were used to “re-elect” Justin Trudeau has the effect of sowing doubts about the outcome of the 2019 Canadian federal election. The meme contributes to the erosion of trust in Canada’s democratic institutions and processes.

A second meme posted on November 13, 2020 suggested that George Soros and the Clinton Foundation are connected to Dominion Voting Systems, which the company has denied. The meme questions the legitimacy of Canada’s election by falsely connecting non-existent electronic ballot counting equipment to Canada’s federal elections.
